HIGH SCHOOL TEACHING

With the support of the Sesto mayor’s office, and after conversations and meetings about our internship program held together with local high-school professors and administrators, we were able to establish a new internship opportunity for up to six of our students at the ITCG Piero Calamandrei Senior High School. We will use the winter semester of 2008 as a trial period for internships in which our students will assist high-school professors in courses where our American students can be of most use. This term, interns will have the opportunity to assist Professor Alessandra Del Lungo in three courses in American and European studies: two courses on 20 th-century American literature and film and a course on the European Union with a strong trans-Atlantic dimension. The intention is to organize lessons and group activities in English, facilitated by our interns, focusing on American culture and history in dialogue with Italy and Europe. This high-school is especially committed to international education, and to that end has developed strong programs in foreign languages. It has also established several exchange programs with European, Australian and American schools. The new internships at this high school will offer our students excellent opportunities to immerse themselves further into Italian culture and language, through interaction with young people (mostly 17- and 18-year-olds) while sharing their own knowledge and expertise in American culture, history, and politics. Students intending to pursue careers in education, international studies, diplomacy, and so forth will also be able to gain valuable professional experience through these internships. The fact that this high-school is a five-minute walk from the Villa Corsi Salviati will certainly help facilitate this exciting new collaboration between our program and Sesto schools.
